Harvest Moon Back to Nature Guide: Villagers, Shops, and Festivals

Harvest Moon: Back to Nature

Villagers, Shops, and Festivals

WARNING: This guide could contain spoilers! Please keep that in mind as you read.

Villagers

It wouldn't be a Harvest Moon game without villagers to populate the town. While almost all the characters are the exact same ones from 64, majority of them have different roles in little Mineral Town. Since there is another guide separate about the girls and the rivals, they will not be mentioned in this guide.

The names listed will be in order of walking through the town.

Saibara: The town's master blacksmith. Along with upgrading your tools, he sells more tools and makes machines for use on your farm. He is Gray's grandfather. His birthday is Spring 11.

Duke: This man makes the local wine and enjoys it often. Besides offering you a week-long job every Fall, he only sells wine and grape juice. He has a wife, Manna, and a daughter, Aja, whom he talks about often. His birthday is Winter 15.

Manna: This lady is quite the talker. She's the one who actually runs the winery shop. Her birthday is Fall 11.

Basil: While he doesn't own a shop or anything, he has written all of the books in the Library in town, most of which are about plants. His wife is Anna and his daughter is Mary. His birthday is Summer 11.

Anna: Basil's wife and Mary's mother, she loves to bake cakes and talk to the other older ladies of the town. Her birthday is Fall 23.

Ellen: An old lady who spends her time in her rocking chair, watching her grandson, Stu, while her granddaughter, Elli, works. Her birthday is Winter 13.

Stu: A little boy who spends his time playing in Ellen's house or in front of the Church with May. His grandmother is Ellen and sister is Elli. His birthday is Fall 5.

Thomas: The big-shot mayor of the town. Well, not really. He's very friendly and tries to help you out in town. He tells you of most of the festivals the day before they occur. His son is Harris. His birthday is Summer 25.

Harris: If there's a crime, he's the one to call since he's the policeman. He patrols all day long, taking a break at various locations. His father is Thomas. His birthday is Summer 4.

Kano: One of the more mysterious members of the town, he lives with Thomas and never really talks to anyone else. He claims to have taken many pictures throughout the years in the town. His birthday is Winter 2.

Jeff: The owner of the Supermarket. He is a pushover and often times complains of being sick. He sells majority of seeds, cooking supplies, and various other things in his shop. He has a wife, Sasha, and a daughter, Karen. His birthday is Winter 29.

Sasha: She loves to visit other villagers and gossip with them. She is married to Jeff and has a daughter, Karen. Her birthday is Spring 30.

Carter: The town's pastor, he lives in the Church and watches May and Stu on certain days. He is a kind man and is there for you when one of your animals die. His birthday is Fall 20.

Zack: He picks up all of your produce and goods at the end of every day (except festivals). He also delivers your cooking utensils when you order them. His house is the only house that you can never enter in the game. His birthday is Summer 29.

Greg: A local fisherman who lives with Zack. His only real purpose is to give you fishing rods. His birthday is Spring 29.

Doug: The owner of the Inn and the chef. He wants his daughter, Ann, to marry one day. His birthday is Winter 11.

Won: A traveling salesman who often times tries to swindle you. He does sell some seeds that are unattainable at the Supermarket. His birthday is Winter 19.

Barley: The owner of Yodel Ranch, he sells cows and sheep as well as fodder, medicine, miracle potions, and a bell. His granddaughter is May. His birthday is Spring 17.

May: A little girl who was left by her mother in her grandfather's, Barley, care. She plays at the Church with Stu often. Her birthday is Winter 26.

Lillia: The owner of the Poultry Farm who has an illness that causes her to be weak. Her husband, Rod, left town in order to search for a cure. She sells you chickens and chicken feed. She has two children: her son, Rick, and her daughter, Popuri. Her birthday is Spring 19.

Gotz: A carpenter and lumberjack who upgrades your farm and house. He is a lonely man who lives in the woods. His birthday is Fall 2.

Louis: He lives with Gotz and is in the town to study bees. His birthday is Spring 2.

Harvest Goddess: She looks over the town and loves offerings from your farm. She's a beautiful lady who resides under the waterfall.

Kappa: A water sprite who lives in the lake on Mother Hill. His only purpose is to give you the mystic berry.

Gourmet: A man who loves food and only shows up to the Cooking Festival.

Festivals

One of my favorite parts of Harvest Moon games are the festivals. It's just a day to look forward towards to greet fellow villagers and partake in some sort of mini game. Whenever you talk to a villager during these festivals, their heart levels go up more from this interaction; their heart levels also go up if you win during a mini game.

Spring

New Years Day: Spring 1: Starts 6:00PM: Square or Inn
This is the only festival that you are unable to attend the first year in the game. You have two options on where you would like to spend the first day of the new year: the Inn or the Square. The Inn has all of the adults drinking and partying it up. The Square has all of the unmarried guys and gals partying and dancing around a fire. If you go to the Square, you can dance with a girl.

Goddess Festival: Spring 8: Starts 10:00AM: Square
A festival where the villagers celebrate the ending of Winter. The day before, you can ask a girl to go with you. This is difficult to do the first year, but it is possible. Each of the girls are dressed in these pink dresses and adorned with flowers. After you talk to the mayor, the girls start dancing for the entire festival. This is a date festival. After dancing, the girl whom you took to the festival will ask you to go somewhere afterwards. You will get lots of affection with her if you do.

Spring Thanksgiving: Spring 14: Starts 6:00AM
This is an all day festival where the town will go about its daily business. This is the day to give the girls a sweet for more affection.

Horse Race: Spring 18: Starts 10:00AM: Square
You are unable to participate the first year in the game. During this festival, you can bet during each race on a horse by talking to the mayor. You can begin the race by talking to Barley. The most likely to win are the ones with the lowest odds. You can also race with your horse when he is grown. He is more likely to win if his heart levels are maxed out and you ride him every day.

Cooking Festival: Spring 22: Starts 10:00AM: Square
It is almost impossible to enter the first year (I have not tested it, but Spa-Boiled Eggs might work). For those who love to cook, this is your festival. You have five opponents who each have brought a dish: Doug, Ann, Anna, Karen, and Manna. Usually the winners are Doug or Ann. After you talk to the mayor, Gourmet will begin tasting dishes, commenting on each one. If you enter Relaxation Tea, you have a very high chance of winning. This is the only time that you are able to talk to Gourmet.

Summer

Opening Day: Summer 1: Starts 10:00AM: Beach
To celebrate the first day of Summer, why not have a race in the ocean? This is a fairly difficult race without practice. Talk to the mayor to begin. He will give you a brief explanation. Your opponents are: Gray, Kai, Jeff, Harris, and Doctor. The best way that I have found to win is to keep hitting X until your speech bubble face turns a dark yellow and looks displeased, then hold triangle to rest to full health. Do this again. Now, you should be over half way, mash X until you reach the finish line and stand up. The first time, you will win a power berry.

Chicken Festival: Summer 7: Starts 10:00AM: Square
Bring your best chicken (the one with the highest heart level) to the festival in hopes of winning. In order to enter, hold your chicken and talk to Rick. He will go through an explanation. It's pretty easy if your chicken has a high heart level. It takes some getting used to, but try to force your opponent's chicken off the edge of the circle. If your chicken wins, she will produce golden eggs.

Tomato Festival: Summer 12: Starts 10:00AM: Square
This is the hardest festival in the game. There are four teams in the Square. Elli, Stu, and optional member May are the Sheep Team. Manna, Duke, and optional member Cliff are the Coconut Team. Ann, Doug, and optional member Gray are the Star Team. Finally, Popuri, Rick, and optional member Kai are the Chicken Team. The optional members do not play if you join the team. The mini game begins when you have joined a team. I have not found a really good strategy for this mini game. Just watch to see if someone is throwing a tomato at you while you are hiding, if not then throw one at someone.

Cow Festival: Summer 20: Starts 10:00AM: Yodel Ranch
The day before, Bailey will come to ask if you want to enter an adult, nonpregnant cow in the festival. Choose the highest heart level in order to win. Attend the festival and talk to Barley to begin the judging. If your cow wins, she will produce golden milk.

Fireworks Display: Summer 24: Starts 6:00PM: Beach
Weeks before the festival, you can ask Kai to go watch the fireworks with you. If you don't want to go with a fellow guy, you can always ask a girl at the beach. This is another date festival, but you do not go anywhere afterwards.

Fall

Music Festival: Fall 3: Starts 6:00PM: Church
The day before, Carter will ask you to play the ocarina during the festival. Attend and talk to Carter for the music to begin. Ann and Elli play the flute, Mary plays the organ, and Karen sings while you play your blue ocarina.

Harvest Festival: Fall 9: Starts 10:00AM: Square
The day where a bunch of villagers bring random ingredients and place them into a hotpot. Sounds like it could go horribly wrong. Bring an item for the soup. I usually just bring a mushroom. There are rumors of players putting their dog or a chicken into the soup. Supposedly you get it back the next day in the Square. Also, you can supposedly fish in the soup.

Moon Viewing Festival: Fall 13: Starts 6:00PM: Mount Moon
While you cannot ask a girl to go with you, if you show up, the girl with the highest heart level will be there waiting for you. It's another date festival, but you cannot go somewhere afterwards. All you really do is look at the moon and talk.

Sheep Festival: Fall 21: Starts 10:00AM: Yodel Ranch
The day before, Barley will ask if you want to enter a sheep. You can enter an adult who is not pregnant and has her wool. Pick the one with the highest heart level. Attend the festival and talk to Barley to begin the judging. If your sheep wins, you will start getting golden wool from her.

Winter

Dog Race: Winter 10: Starts 10:00AM: Square
The day before, Zack will come to ask if you want to enter your dog, accept and he will be gone for a full day. Attend the festival and talk to Zack to begin the race. Your dog has a higher chance of winning if he has a high heart level and a high intelligence. To increase the intelligence, Won will sell you a ball. Throw it to him every day. Now, if he has a high intelligence, you should be able to run the entire time all the way to the finish line with your dog not far behind.

Winter Thanksgiving: Winter 14: Starts 6:00AM: Your Farm
WARNING: Do not get married or propose if you want gifts from the girls in the town.
Try to make sure every girl has at least a purple heart level before the holiday begins. Stay on your farm all day and wait for the girls to come give you sweets. A girl will come by at 6:00AM, 8:00AM, 10:00AM, 1:00PM, and 3:00PM. This is the only way to get chocolate in the game.

Star Night Festival: Winter 24: Starts 6:00PM: A girl's house
The day before, when you talk to a girl, if she likes you enough, she will invite you to have dinner with her family for the festival. Accept and attend the dinner. If you are married, just show up to your own house. It's another date festival.

New Years Eve: Winter 30: Starts 12:00AM: Mount Moon
Late into the night, the villagers like to gather to watch the sun come up for the new year. Attend and talk to Saibara to watch the sun rise with your neighbors.
