Harvest Moon Back to Nature Guide: Tools, Foraging, Fishing, and Mining

Harvest Moon: Back to Nature

Tools, Foraging, Fishing, and Mining

WARNING: This guide could contain spoilers! Please keep that in mind as you read.

Tools

Doing pretty much anything in this game requires a tool, at least if you want to be successful. You will start off with your basic tools: sickle, hammer, axe, watering can and hoe that are sitting in your tool box. Other tools are either given to you or bought.

The tools also have a leveling up system. The more you use them, the better of an upgrade you can get. For instance, if you use your watering can enough, you will notice that in the menu screen, the watering can's power level will get a percentage higher. When the percentage gets to or over 100%, then it's time for an upgrade. The upgrades go from copper, silver, gold, and mystrile (in order). In order to upgrade a tool, bring the tool and an ore to Saibara when he is open. You should have the tool you want upgraded equipped while holding the ore and talk to Saibara. Depending on the upgrade, it will take from 1,000G to 5,000G. It will also take him 3 days to finish.

Be careful when using any tool. Your character has a certain fatigue level that can be leveled up by eating power berries. If your fatigue hits zero, you will be sent to the Clinic for the rest of the day.

Sickle

It is used to cut grass, weeds, and plants. It becomes more useful when you start growing grass on your farm. It can level up. The normal level cuts in a 1x1, the copper level cuts in a 1x3, the silver level cuts in a 2x3, the gold level cuts in a 3x3, and the mystrile level cuts in a 5x5.

Hammer

WARNING: If you want to make all of the recipes in the game, you should leave one small stone on your farm.

One of the more useless tools, the hammer is mainly used to clean up your farm and chase away stray dogs. It can level up. The normal level breaks small rocks only, the copper level breaks large rocks in 4 hits, the silver level breaks large rocks in 2.5 hits and rocky rocks in 4.5 hits, the gold level breaks large rocks in 1 hit and rocky rocks in 2.5 hits, and the mystile level breaks both large and rocky rocks in 1 hit.

Axe

The only use for an axe is gathering lumber, obviously. It can level up. The normal level cuts only sticks, the copper level cuts stumps in 6 hits, the silver level cuts stumps in 3 hits, the gold level cuts stumps in 2 hits, and mystile level cuts stumps in 1 hit.

Watering Can

This is the most useful tool that you are given at the beginning of the game. It only waters on tilled ground, where it turns to a dark brown. The can can hold up to 100 squares of water. You can fill it up at your pond. It can level up. The normal level waters in a 1x1, the copper level waters in a 1x3, the silver level waters in a 2x3, the gold level waters in a 3x3, and the mystrile waters in a 5x3.

Hoe

An extremely useful tool all year long, especially during Winter. It tills the earth in your field for planting seeds, and it also tills the earth in the caves for mining. It can level up. The normal level tills in a 1x1, the copper level tills in a 1x2, the silver level tills in a 1x3, the gold level tills in a 1x4, and the mystrile level tills in a 1x6. When you use it in the mines, the hoe will still only till for 1x1 even if it is upgraded.

Bell

Can be bought at Yodel Ranch for 500G. It calls your animals to you when used.

Brush

Can be bought at the Blacksmith's for 800G. You can brush your cows, sheep, and horse to raise the heart levels.

Milker

Can be bought at the Blacksmith's for 2,000G. You can milk your adult cows to obtain milk every day.

Clippers

Can be bought at the Blacksmith's for 1,800G. You can clip your adult sheep's wool every seven days for wool.

Fishing Rod/Pole

This is given to you by Greg early in the morning on the pier at the Beach. Make sure that you have an empty space in your tool inventory for the Rod. It is used to fish for fish, obviously. It takes some time to get used to- just hold the square button and wait for your character to strain then let go.

When you have 50 fish in your pond on your farm, Greg will come by and give you an upgrade: the pole! Make sure that you have an empty slot in your inventory for it.

The Fishing Pole is used to catch the King Fish.

Foraging

The easiest way to make money is by foraging. These are products that grow in the woods, by the Hot Springs, and on Mother Hill. They change every season with Winter not having any. Flowers also grow in the wild, but they are not profitable, instead give them to villagers.

Spring

Bamboo Shoot     3 grow     sells for 50G
Blue Grass     2 grow     sells for 100G
Toy Flower
Moondrop Flower

Summer

Red Grass     2 grow     sells for 100G
Pink Cat Flower

Fall

Apple     3 grow     sells for 50G
Green Grass     2 grow     sells for 100G
Mushroom     4 grow     sells for 70G
Poisonous Mushroom     1 grow      sells for 100G
Truffle     1 grow     sells for 500G
Wild Grape     2 grow     sells for 50G
Magic Red Flower

Fishing

There are several places to fish around the village some being worthless. Fish are can be shipped for money, used in recipes, or you can throw them in your pond to grow and breed. When you do fish, you can catch either a small fish, medium fish, and large fish. The small one sells for 50G. The medium one sells for 120G. The large one sells for 200G.

In order to have your fish breed, just throw them into the pond on your farm and feed them with fish feed. This is bought at the Supermarket for 20G each. Just throw one in your pond once a day.

The river that runs through your farm is the worst spot to fish seeing as you will mostly catch twigs rather than fish. Although you can catch small fish.

The Goddess pond (the one with the waterfall running into it) is the second worse place to fish. You can catch either small or medium fish here. There is a King Fish to catch here: the Char. In order to catch him, you'll need to have made all of the recipes that require fish.

The Pier at the Beach is the second best place to fish. You can catch any fish: small, medium, or large, but the amount of trash is a trade off. There are three King Fish to catch here: Angler, Squid, and Sea Bream. The Angler requires you to fish during Winter from 6:00AM - 8:00AM or 10:00PM - 5:50AM. The Squid requires you to throw a small fish in and start fishing right after during the Summer. The Sea Bream requires to ship at least 200 fish by throwing them into the shipping bin by hand (not using your horse or the basket) then fish during Spring, Fall, or Winter.

Mother Hill lake is the best place to fish. You can catch either small or medium fish, but the amount you catch verses every where else makes it the best. The King Fish here is the Carp, but you can only catch him after you've caught the other five.

The Winter Mine doesn't have any other fish other than a King Fish. Go to the bottom floor to catch the Catfish.

Mining

Seeing as mining is really the only thing to do during Winter, it will become your best friend, or you will end up hating it so much that you just sleep through the days. Either way, mining is a good way to earn some extra cash. There are two mines in the town. One is behind the Goddess Pond/Waterfall and the other is in the middle of Mother Hill Lake (only accessible during Winter).

In order to mine, all you need is an empty inventory and a hoe. Till the ground until you find an ore. Sometimes you will even find a power berry or 10G.

The waterfall cave is accessible year long, but doesn't hold as much value as the Winter mine. However, it is useful to get ores for your tools.

Junk Ore     sells for 1G
Copper Ore     sells for 15G
Silver Ore     sells for 20G
Gold Ore     sells for 25G
Mystrile Ore     sells for 40G

The Winter Mine is accessible during Winter by the lake freezing over. It holds lots of value especially if you use the basket and visit several times a day.

Junk Ore     sells for 1G
Mystrile Ore     sells for 40G
Adamantite     sells for 50G
Orichalcum     sells for 50G
